The “CRASH (Deluxe)” edition serves as the expanded version of Charli XCX’s fifth studio album, which was released on March 25, 2022, precisely one week after the original record. Notable collaborators on this project include longtime producer A. G. Cook, Deaton Chris Anthony, ILYA, Digital Farm Animals, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Oscar Holter, among others.
Charli XCX herself announced the forthcoming release of the deluxe version of “CRASH” on February 21, 2022, through a video posted on her TikTok account. The additional tracks included in the deluxe edition amount to four, one of which is the previously shelved song titled “Sorry If I Hurt You,” which was initially intended to serve as the album’s title track.
While Charli XCX’s previous work was recognized for its experimental and hyperpop production, “CRASH” showcases a more mainstream dance-pop sound, with Charli referring to it as her “major label sell-out” record. The album incorporates elements of ’80s and ’90s pop music, drawing inspiration from artists like Janet Jackson. The aesthetic themes of the album, including the title and artwork, were influenced by David Cronenberg’s 1996 film of the same name. “CRASH” received positive reviews from music critics upon its release and achieved commercial success, topping charts in Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. It also became Charli XCX’s first top-ten album in New Zealand and the United States.
Following the critical acclaim of her third studio album, “Charli,” released in September 2019, Charli XCX revealed her intention to work on a new album in an interview with music magazine The Fader. She expressed her excitement about future projects, stating that she was already thinking about the next album and had completed it. In November 2019, she announced her plans to release two new albums in the coming year.
