American hip-hop duo EarthGang’s second studio album is titled Ghetto Gods. On February 25, 2022, Dreamville, Interscope, and Spillage Village made it available. Future, JID, J. Cole, Musiq Soulchild, Baby Tate, CeeLo Green, Nick Cannon, and Ari Lennox all make cameo appearances on the album.
EarthGang’s deluxe edition of the album, which featured contributions from Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Smino, and Blxckie, was made available on July 1st, 2022. EarthGang revealed the album’s release date, which was initially set for January 28, 2022, on November 3, 2021. The album, however, was postponed for four weeks. Instead, before the album was formally released, the duo gave fans free live performances of it in the US and London, England.
Olu discussed the album and compared it to the The Wiz-inspired notion of Mirrorland, adding, “This is literally like The Office, where we actually look into the camera every once in a while, being like, ‘Do you see what’s going on?'” WowGr8 compared the album to Spilligion, who said “it was a lot of uncertainty,” saying the music on it represented “absolute certainty.” The next step is finding inner serenity and comfort in both the known and unknown.
EarthGang planned to release the album in 2021 and released the promotional track “Options” with Wale on December 18, 2020.
They published a freestyle over Drake’s “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” on May 15, 2021, with Olu rapping, “Release date is what I’m waiting on / Interscope gotta crunch the numbers.” They released a song called “Aretha” on May 25 that included a sample of Aretha Franklin’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. She released a new song on August 9 called “Erykah,” which features a sample of Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat.” “In front of our neighborhood, we kind of realized we could tie it in with the Ghetto Gods theme by thematically and very deliberately paying tribute to people that overcame and became icons and legends in their own right,” WowGr8 said when explaining the concept of releasing freestyles as tributes. Since the CD is titled “Metamorphosis,” we only honor those who underwent transformations that we find admirable.
