The creative journey for this album began in 2021, with the first completed song being “Tormenta,” a captivating collaboration with Bad Bunny. Originally intended as the lead single for the second season of the web series Song Machine, it ultimately paved the way for the decision to create a traditional studio album. Gorillaz’s permanent collaborator, Damon Albarn, shared that the album was already completed by May 2022. The album’s production was led by the talented American record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, Greg Kurstin, alongside British music producer Remi Kabaka Jr.
Six singles were released from Cracker Island, each showcasing Gorillaz’s signature blend of genre-bending music. The lead single, “Cracker Island,” featuring Thundercat, was released on June 22, 2022. Following this, the band unveiled the album’s name, Cracker Island, along with its release date, artwork, and tracklist on August 31. The second single, “New Gold,” featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown, followed suit. The subsequent singles, “Baby Queen,” “Skinny Ape,” and “Silent Running” featuring Adeleye Omotayo, were released to great acclaim, further fueling excitement for the album’s release.
