“GA⅁ OЯDER”, the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Kesha, was released on May 19, 2023, through Kemosabe Records and RCA Records. This album marks the culmination of Kesha’s contract with Kemosabe, which she signed when she was just 18 years old. The album announcement came in late April 2023, with Kesha taking on the role of executive producer, as she did for her previous two albums. Collaborating primarily with producer Rick Rubin, Kesha explored her more vulnerable side to create this project. The album also features contributions from Stuart Crichton, Stint, Drew Pearson, as well as new collaborators such as Jussifer, Hudson Mohawke, Kennedi, and Jason Lader.

Musically, “Gag Order” ventures into uncharted territory, departing from Kesha’s electro-pop sound in her previous album, High Road. Instead, it embraces a diverse range of genres, including art pop, experimental, electronic, and psychedelic elements. Additionally, influences from hyperpop, soul, lo-fi, dark wave, country, and gospel genres are seamlessly woven into the album. Kesha describes Gag Order as a culmination of all the genres she enjoys, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Lyrically, the album delves into darker themes, touching on subjects like death, depression, emotional exploitation, control, hope, and a search for truth. It contrasts with High Road, which aimed to recapture Kesha’s party pop sound, as Gag Order takes a more introspective approach, addressing the emotional impact of her legal battle with former producer Dr. Luke.

Gag Order has garnered positive reviews from music critics, who praise Kesha’s vocals and songwriting, though opinions on the production vary. Prior to the album’s release, three singles were unveiled: “Eat the Acid”, “Fine Line”, released as a dual single, and “Only Love Can Save Us Now”. Additionally, a live acoustic EP, Gag Order (Live Acoustic EP from Space), featuring four live acoustic performances of album tracks, was released on June 30, 2023. Kesha plans to embark on the Gag Order Tour in October 2023 to promote the album.

Billboard had previously reported on Kesha’s “gorgeous folk album,” but its release was put on hold due to her legal battle. The announcement of Gag Order came as Kesha collaborated closely with Rick Rubin, rediscovering her passion for music and focusing on the art rather than chart success. The album reflects her feelings and emotions, and the process was driven by the desire to create authentic music. Singles and radio play were not part of the equation, as Kesha prioritized genuine artistic expression.
