Olamide, a rapper from Nigeria, released his eleventh studio album, titled UY Scuti, in 2021. It is a follow-up to his 2020 album, Carpe Diem, which has an Afrobeats flavor. Olamide continues his musical evolution with UY Scuti, laying down smooth rhymes over pop, roots reggae, R&B, and Afrobeats soundscapes.
Olamide says that UY Scuti is the start of the new him and the continuation of his brand’s new course. He transforms the lessons he learned from his early days on the streets into pop songs that represent his broadening perspective. He explains, “I’m a global citizen now, so my choice of sound is a synthesis of all the lovely music I’ve heard. This is a full-time pop album, and it’s way, way above everything I’ve ever done.”
The title of the album was influenced by Olamide’s kid, who is a lover of astrology. He once questioned Olamide about the size of the largest star in the cosmos. Olamide learned that it was UY Scuti and named the project after it because it was the most significant career move he had ever made.
The album includes songs like “Need for Speed,” which uses Lagos as a point of comparison to discuss the ups and downs of every typical ghetto kid; “Jailer,” featuring Jaywillz, which is just vibes and feel-good music; “Rock,” which is about having fun, turning up, and listening to good music; “Julie,” in which Olamide admits to being crazy and imperfect but is willing to sacrifice everything for his woman’s love; and “Rough Up,”
