No limits seem unattainable with the potential that the synthetic pop group shows in their first studio album.
Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin are the duo that make up the synthetic pop group Magdalena Bay. Their name may not sound very familiar to you or nothing, but the couple of artists have been on the scene for a while. The two met in high school and started a progressive rock group initially, but these were quickly influenced by artists like Grimes, Chairlift and Charli XCX to turn a new sound based on a bedroom pop that expands in all directions without shame.
After starting to stand out on the internet with her first singles , Magdalena Bay released her first EP “A Little Rhythm And A Wicked Feeling” last year. Now, the duo a few days ago released their debut album “Mercurial World”, which is one of the most outstanding pop works of all that we have been able to listen to this year. In this, the American group plunges us into their virtual and technicolor world, a brilliantly spun from the beginning to the end (or, following the joke of their tracklist, from the end to the beginning) and influenced by luminous, enveloping sounds and addictive.
Throughout the album you can hear a wide range of styles that always complement a common thread that shows the personality of the couple, which in turn allows great versatility. Tracks like the housero “Chaeri” or the irresistible Shura funk of “Secrets (Your Fire)”, “Hysterical Us” and “ Dawning Of The Season” show the most danceable side of the album.
Then there are tracks like the magnificent “You Lose!”, which unites grunge and its distorted guitars, in which Mica shows a less controlled attitude but knowing, with the main magnetic essence of the group. In “Dreamcatching” or robotics “Follow The Leader” psychedelia and evanescent melodies take over the environment further expanding the limits of the couple, only to close the album with the explosion of euphoric pop that “The Beggining” represents.
You can now listen to “Mercurial World” in full on Spotify.
